APP INSTRUCTIONS

This page offers details on how to use the Shazzam app. If after reading through Shazzam's capabilities and usage you still have questions, feel free to reach out to our support for further assistance. Anything denoted as "Premium" is only available/enabled/activated upon paid subscription, which currently include both Stealth Mode and Device Switch/Content Transfer features and their associated components.

GETTING STARTED

Registration
Once Shazzam is installed, open the app and tap the "Get Started!" link at the bottom. This will take you to the login/registration screen. If you have not yet registered with Shazzam, tap the Register toggle. To register, provide your e-mail address, password and full name. This will help uniquely identify you within Shazzam. You will NOT be able to modify any of these components once supplied without contacting our support team. Once submitted, you're all set to go and will be immediately logged into Shazzam.

Logging In
If you've alread registered, supply your e-mail address and password to log in. If you'd like to use biometrics (i.e. face ID) to log in instead, enable that feature in your settings (See "Settings" section for details).

Once logged in, you'll be taken to the content/main screen where all of your content will be listed (or some may not if stealth mode is enabled!).

Logging Out
In most cases you won't need to log out of the app. Simply close it. However, if you would like to log out, open the hamburger menu at the top-left of the screen and tap the Settings option. On this screen you'll be able to log out of Shazzam. If you log out, or close the app, you'll be required to log back in when re-opened.

Removing Your Account
If you would like to remove your Shazzam account (and all of the content supplied), open the hamburger menu at the top-left of the screen and tap the Settings option. Tap the "Remove Account" button to remove your Shazzam account.

Note - Removing the app from your device does not remove your Shazzam account and any remaining contents stored on our server. It will, however, remove anything saved to your device, including any retrieved/created content (on the device only). If you'd like to remove all content from our servers and your device, follow the "Removing Your Account" steps. If you remove the app and stored contents from your device, re-installing the app will NOT bring back the past/removed content.

CONTACTS

Once you're logged in, you can immediately start managing your existing library contents or creating new library content (notes and audio). However, you will be unable to send any messages until you add existing Shazzam members to your contact list.

Adding Contacts
To add contacts, open the hamburger menu at the top-left of your screen and tap the Contacts link. To add a Shazzam member as a contact, tap the "Plus" button at the bottom of the screen, add the existing Shazzam member's contact name (they will have to provide that information to you), and tap the "Add Contact" button. This will send a request to the desired member where they can either accept or decline. If they accept, you can start sending messages.

Removing Contacts
If you would like to remove someone from your contact list, on the Contacts screen, tap the trash icon associated with contact you wish to remove.

Rescinding Contact Requests
To rescind a pending contact request from your contact list, on the Contacts screen, tap the trash icon associated with the contact you wish to rescind.

Accepting Contact Requests
If you have received a request to add another Shazzam member as a mutual contact, on the Contact screen, tap the green checkmark icon associated with that request to accept. Once accepted, messaging can occur.

Rejecting Contact Requests
If you have received a request to add another Shazzam member as a mutual contact, on the Contact screen, tap the red reject icon associated with that request to reject. Once rejected, that contact request will no longer appear.

Changing Contact Name (Friendly Name)
The contact name assigned to you when you register isn't friendly nor easy to remember. Because of that Shazzam allows you to add a friendly name for any contact. This name will be displayed for messaging.

Blocking/Unblocking Contacts
If at any time want to block a contact from messaging you, click the green thumbs up icon, and confirm your request. Once completed, the green thumbs up will turn to a red thumbs down, indicating the contact is blocked from sending you messages. To unblock a blocked contact, click the red thumbs down and confirm your actions. The icon will return to a green thumbs up when completed.

Toggle Contact Stealth (Premium)
Toggling your contacts' stealth from disabled (the green open eye icon) to enabled (the red closed eye icon) allows you to display (disabled) or hide (enabled) the contact from the contact list, including all messaging for these contacts, during stealth mode (See details regarding stealth mode, below). If your app is not in stealth mode, you will see all contacts, including their stealth status. However, if your app has stealth mode enabled, you will only see contacts that do not have stealth mode enabled. In short, this is one way to hide a particular contact and all of their messages (past or new), if there is a need.

Toggling Contact Incoming Notification Sound
When the app is in the background or closed, your device will beep for new incoming messages. To silence the beep for incoming messages for a particular contact, tap the green microphone next to the desired contact. To re-enable the beep, tap the red microphone with a slash for the desired contact.

SETTINGS

The settings screen allows you to change certain configurations within the Shazzam app as well as logging out and removing your account. Some items within the Settings screen are for visual purposes only, and can't be changed.

Enable Face ID
If you'd like to log into the Shazzam app using your face ID as your credentials, simply tap the "Enable Face ID" toggle. Likewise, to disable face ID authentication, de-select the "Enable Face ID" toggle.

Remove Account
If you would like to remove your Shazzam account (and all of the content supplied), open the hamburger menu at the top-left of the screen and tap the Settings option. Click the "Remove Account" button to remove your Shazzam account.

Notes

  • Removing your account does not de-install the app from your device. Removing your account removes any remaining stored content from our servers, as well as any/all content on your device. To remove your app from your device follow Apple's procedures for removing apps from your device.
  • Removing the app from your device does not remove your Shazzam account and any remaining contents stored on our server. Removing the app from your device will, however, remove all saved content on your device.
  • To cleanly remove everything, remove your account by following the above instructions followed up by removing the app from your device.
Logging Out
In most cases you won't need to log out of the app. Simply close it. However, if you would like to log out, open the hamburger menu at the top-left of the screen and tap the Settings option. On this screen you'll be able to log out of Shazzam. If you log out, or close the app, you'll be required to log back in when re-opened.

Auto-Stealth On Receive (Premium)
When someone sends you a Shazzam message, with "Auto-Stealth On Receive" disabled, the message will visible in the list of content on the main screen - no matter whether stealth mode is enabled or not. If you want, by default, to have all new incoming message content, no matter who their from, to be flagged as stealth (not visible during stealth mode), enable the "Auto-Stealth On Receive". This offers the highest level of security for all new incoming messages. Stealth mode is described in detail, below.

Note - Enabling "Auto-Stealth On Receive" only applies to newly received messages, not to locally saved content (e.g. encrypting an existing photo library item, saved note, or saved audio message - i.e. something not delivered. For locally saved content, you will have to select each item from the list on the main screen and manually toggle the stealth mode.

CONTENT SCREEN (MAIN SCREEN)

After logging in, or after you select "Content" from the menu, you will be viewing the main content screen. There are many important components to understand.

Content

  • Messages
    • This screen should be familiar as it's very similar to your existing messaging app. Shazzam, however, offers the unique ability with flexible message encryption. That means that any encrypted content will appear as jibberish and need to be decrypted each time you wish to reveal the content meaning.

    • When you first see the messages screen, it will display an image stating there is no content yet. However, once you've contacted other members, each contact that you've communicated with will be displayed, along with the last message received from them, in order by date (The "high-level" view).

    • When you tap on the contact, you'll see all messages (the "conversation"), by date, between you and that contact. As mentioned above, any encrypted message will appear as gibberish. To decrypt the content for a particular message, tap the encrypted message bubble, supply the correct secret, and tap enter, or by tap the lock icon to unlock.

    • To remove messages, tap and hold the corner border-box for any message. This will toggle the display of small checkboxs in the upper right-hand corner of every message. Select all messages you'd like to remove and tap the trash icon to remove the selectced messages.

  • Library
    • The library displays anything saved that was not sent to another member (saved modifiable notes, copied encrypted photo album items, or recorded audio).

    • The library content is ordered by date

    • To view specific content, tap the apropriate item. If the item is encrypted, it must be decrypted to view the content. To do so, supply the correct secret and tap enter, or click the lock icon

    • To remove any library item, tap the appropriate trash icon and confirm.

Creating Content
There are two ways to create content.

  • The first method to create content is to tap the "plus" icon at the bottom the content views (Library and/or Message views). That will bring up the "create new content" screen. This screen offers all of the options for creating content - messages and library, as well as all media types (text messages, media messages, encrypted notes and encrypted media), as well as offers the choice of encryption where appropriate.

  • The second method to create content is when viewing the conversation of a specific contact, and is for non-encrypted text messages only. At the bottom of this screen is a text-area where you can type your message and tap the green up-arrow icon to send/deliver. This will create a non-encrypted message to the contact of the conversation. If during the process you wish to encrypt the content or change the content type, click the small "plus" icon to the left of the text area. This will bring up the "create new content" screen where you can have the same options as described in the previous bullet, and you'll have to re-select some of the options to ensure proper deliver (e.g. choose the contact if sending a message, etc.).

If the content is a message, it will be sent to our servers to be delivered to the recipient. That content will be saved to up to 30 days on our servers, where after that it will be removed. If the recipient has not retrieved that message before it is removed, they will not receive it.

Notes:
  • For encrypted messages, you must ensure the recipient knows the secret or they will be unable to view the content. Provide a secret hint that will help the recpipient know/remember the secret. WE DO NOT SAVE THE SECRET ANYWHERE.
  • While on-line, if you remove the sent message from your list and it hasn't been received yet, it will be removed from your device and NOT be sent to recipient. If the recipient has already received the message, it will ONLY be removed from your device.
  • If you remove the app from your mobile device and reinstall it, or start the mobile app from a different device, any message that exists on our servers will be retrieved by that device (non-message content will not be retrieved as that is never sent to our servers).
  • When saving content or sending messages, be sure you have enough space on your device for that content. Running out of space can cause unexpected behavior and possibly unrecoverable content corruption on the device (Shazzam data only).

Content Filtering
When on the main content screen, tap the hamburger menu in the upper-left corner and select the "Display Filters". Choose from a variety of filtering options to tailor your main content list output.

Stealth Mode (Premium)
Shazzam not only offers the ability to encrypt content, but also allows the unique ability to make specific content (messages, library contents, etc.) disappear. This is known as "Stealth Mode". Changing the Stealth Mode state is accomplished by a combined tapping of the circular buttons on the main content screen in a particular sequence (The 4 circular buttons on the cornors as well as the icon in the top-center). There are several status states that Stealth Mode can reside. They are listed as follows:

  • Unset - When Stealth Mode is in the "unset" state you will see a grey "eye" icon in the top-center of the screen. This state means the stealth mode "code" has not yet been set, and all content will be visible, even stealth messages (similar to disabled).
  • Setting - When Stealth Mode is in the "setting" state, you will see an orange keyboard icon in the top-center of the screen. This state means the stealth mode code is currently being set/changed.
  • Resetting - When Stealth Mode is in the "resetting" state, you will see an orange keyboard icon in the top-center of the screen. This state means that the stealth mode code is being "factory reset" (or unset)
  • Enabling/Disabling - When the Stealth Mode is in the "enabling" or "disabling" state you will see an orange open eye icon in the top-center of the screen. This state means that Stealth Mode is currently enabled or disabled; and you are providing the stealth code to toggle the state
  • Enabled - When the Stealth Mode is in the "enabled" state you will see a blue "closed" eye icon in the top-center of the screen. This state means that Stealth Mode is currently enabled (a higher state of security/privacy) and messages flagged as Stealth will be removed from content list. Any unwanting visitor would not even know the stealth content items even exist.
  • Disabled - When the Stealth Mode is in the "disabled" state you will see a blue "open" eye icon in the top-center of the screen. This state means that Stealth Mode is currently disabled (the open eye indicates all content will be displayed in the list - i.e. the open eye can see everything - a lower state of security/privacy) and all content, including content flagged as Stealth content will be visible in the list

Stealth Code (Premium)
The stealth code is used to change the status of stealth mode. It is accomplished by tapping the four corner circluar buttons in the correct sequence. Before changing the stealth mode status, you need to set the stealth code. Once set, you will use the below procedures to enable/disable/reset the current stealth mode.

Note - If you forget the stealth code you will be unable to change the current stealth setting. You will need to contact support for help in resetting the code.

Setting Stealth Code
If the stealth code has not yet been set (indicated by a grey eye icon in the top-center of the content screen), you can set the code by pressing the grey eye icon. The grey eye icon will change to an orange keyboard icon (Ready to set mode). At this point, tap the circluar icons in any of the 4 corners of the screen. Remember the sequence! You can tap as many of the corner icons as you'd like. When you're satisfied with what you've tapped, tap the orange keyboard icon in the top-center of the screen to save. You will be prompted. If you think you may have done something incorrectly, or want to try again, either choose No when prompted to save, or simply tap the orange keyboard icon again (the orange keyboard will change back to a grey eye icon again indicating the code is unset).

Once set, the orange keyboard will change to a closed eye icon indicating that the code is set and stealth mode is enabled (anything flagged as stealth content will NOT be displayed (i.e. hidden)).

Toggling Stealth Mode
To toggle the stealth mode, tap the blue eye icon at the top-center of the screen. The blue eye icon will change to an orange eye icon (accepting code). At this point tap the four corner circular icons in the correct sequence. Once completed, tap the orange eye icon to toggle. If you tapped the correct sequence, the stealth mode will toggle. If you tapped the incorrect sequence, the stealth mode will continue to be what it was before you attempted to initiate the change.

Effects Of Stealth Mode

  • Disabled
    • All message content and contacts are visible
  • Enabled
    • Any contact flagged as stealth will not be visible from the contact list
    • Any contact flagged as stealth, all messages to/from that contact will NOT be visible from the content screen (hide all messages from a particular contact)
    • Any contact NOT flagged as stealth will have all messages visible EXCEPT for individual messages flagged as stealth (manually/selectively hide specific messages only)

Unsetting/Resetting Stealth Code
If you find you don't like the current stealth code or simply want to change the sequence, while stealth mode is disabled (the blue open eye icon is displayed), tap the blue eye icon in top-center of the screen 3 times (The first tap will change the blue eye icon to orange). Once done, the eye icon in the top-center of the screen will change to an orange keyboard. When you see the orange keyboard icon, tap the correct current sequence followed by tapping the orange keyboard icon. If you tapped the sequence correctly, the orange keyboard will change to a grey eye icon (indicating the stealth code is unset).

Note: - Resetting the stealth code can only be done while not in stealth mode (the blue open eye icon is displayed in the top-center of the screen). This is done to ensure someone else doesn't try to reset the code.

Device Switch/Content Transfer
While Shazzam only allows a single device to actively receive messages from other Shazzam contacts (defined as the "primary device"), you do have the ability to transfer content from one device to another. This situation may occur when you have multiple devices - such as an IPhone and IPad. Both devices must be connected/logged in with the same account credentials to perform this activity. Transfering device content has two phases - the send/transfer, and the receive/download. Follow the below steps to transfer content from one device to another.

  • To start the process, on the main content screen tap the "Transfer" link.

  • Ensure the role selected is "Sender".

  • Tap the "Start Transfer" text at the bottom of the screen. This will start the transfer process. As there can be many messages and content being transferred, this process can take some time. It may appear as if the app is stuck/hung, but it is hard at work transferring the content from the device. This step will transfer all of the content to our servers for temporary storage (Up to 3 days).

  • Once the transfer is complete, on the second device, the one that would like to receive the content, click the "Transfer" link from the main content screen.

  • Ensure the role selected is "Receiver".

  • Tap the "Start Transfer" text at the bottom of the screen. This will start retrieving the sent content from our servers. As there can be many messages and content being transferred, this process can take some time. It may appear as if the app is stuck/hung, but it is hard at work transferring the content to the device.

  • Once the transfer is complete, the "secondary" device will have the same content as the "primary".

"OFFLINE" CAPABILITIES

Conformities
Shazzam requires communication with our servers for certain tasks. If for some reason communication is lost/disabled (e.g. out of cell coverage), Shazzam will continue to have some offline capabilities. Anything not listed below will have offline abilities. If you are "offline"

  • New messages you attempt to send will be queued until your communication services are restored
  • Messages you attempt to remove will be removed from your device and the notification to our servers will be queued until services are restored
  • Contact modifications (adding/removing) will be disabled until communication is restored
  • Toggling incoming contact sound notifications will be disabled until communication is restored
  • Logging in with a password will be disabled until communication is restored
  • Account changes will be disabled until communication is restored
